This is a little bit about me, my rattery, and my breeding ethics. Hi my name is Kim and I got my first rat in 1990... He was a beautiful Black Hooded male named Mickey and there my interest in rats started. But sadly there was no rat information available to me in the Northern Territory so what I do know has came from my experience of watching, listening and just trying things. So first let me tell you a little bit about me. I was born in a small town in the N.T called Katherine. I was born with blonde hair and brown eyes. I still have the brown eyes but I change my hair colour every now and then and its been everything from Black to bright Purple. I'm a Plus Sized woman and proud of it, I eat very little but am Plus Sized due to a medical reason that makes it easy for me to put the weight on but harder to take it off. I have my nose pierced and I have a number of tattoo's, including at least one rat memorial tattoo. I love all types of music and although I am fairly shy and sometimes seem to be a little naive, this is just because I prefer to try and see the good in everything and everyone. I don't judge people on how they look, what they do, their religion, the colour of their skin or even their sexuality as everyone is different and thats what I like about people. Plus if you spend your time judging people or hating a certain type of people then you will miss out on meeting some great people and having some fun times. My mother died suddenly and unexpectedly in 1993 just 2 months before my 21st birthday. I then moved to Victoria where I met my husband a month later and then we were married in December 1995. David was and still is my knight in shinning armor. The year I got married I was also diagnosed with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder.. from those anxieties I have also developed a number of phobia's, including phone phobia... Since late 2008 I've started to tell people that I have mental illness issues.. its taken me this long because of being embarresed and afraid of what people would think and say, as even in this day and age, the words.. mental illness .. still have a stigma attached to them.. My husband David was a little scared of the rats at the start but once he realized that they are sweet, loving and smart and were not going to attack him he also fell in love with them. If we both had to choose one sex of rat, he would choose the girls and I like the boys more because they are squishier, but they are all lovely and hopefully we never have to choose as it would probably be too hard to do that. David and I are unable to have biological children together and so we are currently just a family of 2, but my rats, dog and cat are substitute children, they are my fur kids. Now I started a Rattery because of how much I love rats and how much I want people to realize what great little animals they are. My rats are part of my family and not all of them are bred from because I only breed the ones who have the best temperaments and seem to have the best health, but whether they are being bred from or not I love them all the same. I just want what is best for all rats because they are so smart and so loving and so beautiful... Rats of course are not for everybody but how will you know if you dont give them a try, and we will take back any rats you get from us if you are no longer able to keep them. If you do plan on getting a rat, and hopefully a same sex pair and not just a single rat, please think about getting a rat from a proper pet breeder and not from a pet shop, although pet shops are cheaper, you take the chance of ending up with a pregnant baby if you get a female who is kept in a mixed sex tank, plus most rats at pet shops come from feeder breeders who are not interested in breeding for temperament or health and so they don't care about inbreeding or about the fact that breeding a female before she is at least 6 months old can cause harm to the rat and her babies, a young females growth can be stunted if she has babies because she will give calcium to her growing babies and to do that she will take it from her own bones. So breeding from young rats and then letting them breed at a young age will eventually lead to health problems down the line. Of course not all rats that come from a pet shop will be bad, in fact I have pet shop rats myself, but it is better being able to talk to the breeder and to find a rat that can have some of its pedigree traced back even if its just to its parents, at least its a start. Also rats from breeders tend to be better socialized and so not as nervous. I became a breeder so that I could help improve the rat temperament and health for the better. What ever little money I make from selling my babies goes back into the rats in the way of food, toys, litter and vet bills. So I end up spending more money each fortnight on my rats than I could ever make by selling all of my baby rats. But they are like children to me, especially since I can not actually have children of my own, and so that is why I love them as much as I do and I am going to always try and do my best for them. I do believe that animals have thoughts and feelings just like all of us. We are the only species on this planet that can protect and care for every other species. All animals are Beautiful and Special so Please always treat them well. Take a look at our other Pets |
